The Little Things You Don’t Expect When You Become a Grandparent

The Little Things You Don’t Expect When You Become a Grandparent

There are the things you expect when you become a grandparent.

The excitement. The cuddles. The photographs. The overwhelming love.

But then there are all the little things nobody really prepares you for.

The things that catch you completely off guard.

You might expect to fall in love with your grandchild. Of course you do. But perhaps you don’t expect the feeling that comes when you see your own child holding their baby for the first time.

Suddenly, you’re looking at your son or daughter in a completely different way.

The little person you once held, comforted and watched grow is now holding a little person of their own.

And somehow, your heart feels completely full.

You might become surprisingly emotional

You may find yourself getting teary over things you never thought would make you emotional.

Their first smile.

A tiny hand wrapped around your finger.

Hearing them say “Grandma” or “Grandad” for the first time.

Watching your child soothe them when they cry.

Even seeing a photograph of them asleep might be enough to make you stop what you’re doing and smile.

It’s funny how something so small can take up such a huge space in your heart.

You might find yourself thinking about your own children differently

Becoming a grandparent can make you look back at your own journey as a parent.

You remember the sleepless nights.

The first steps.

The school runs.

The cuddles.

The arguments.

The moments when you wondered if you were getting it right.

And then you watch your child become a parent themselves.

You may suddenly appreciate things about your own parents that you never understood at the time.

You may find yourself thinking, How did we get here so quickly?

Because it really does feel like yesterday that they were the baby.

You’ll probably take far too many photographs

You might promise yourself you won’t become that grandparent.

And then you’ll have 147 photographs of the same baby sleeping.

One from the front.

One from the side.

One where their little hand is visible.

And another because they looked particularly cute in that one.

And honestly?

Take them.

Because one day, those ordinary little moments will become precious memories.

You may discover that ordinary moments become extraordinary

Nobody tells you how special the ordinary things can feel.

A cup of tea while your grandchild sleeps beside you.

A walk in the pram.

Reading the same story for the tenth time.

Watching them discover something for the very first time.

Their sleepy cuddles.

Their little noises.

The way they reach for you.

You don’t need a big day out or a special occasion.

Sometimes the moments you treasure most are the ones you almost didn’t notice at the time.

You might become completely obsessed with their little personality

It’s not just that they’re a baby.

It’s them.

You’ll notice the little expressions they make.

The way they wrinkle their nose.

The funny faces they pull.

The things that make them laugh.

The little habits they develop.

And before you know it, you’ll be able to recognise their different cries and know exactly which face means they’re tired, hungry or just being a little bit cheeky.

You’ll start collecting these tiny pieces of who they are.

And watching that little personality grow can be one of the most wonderful parts of becoming a grandparent.

You may realise just how quickly time passes

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises is how much you suddenly want to slow everything down.

Because you know.

You know how quickly babies become toddlers.

How quickly toddlers become children.

How quickly children grow up.

You’ve already lived through it once.

And now you’re watching it happen all over again.

Only this time, you get to experience it from a slightly different place.

You get to soak up the cuddles.

Make the memories.

Be there for the milestones.

And treasure the moments without necessarily having to worry about all the things that come with being the parent.

And perhaps the biggest surprise of all…

You may discover a whole new kind of love.

A love that is difficult to explain until you experience it.

Because becoming a grandparent isn’t simply about having another little person to love.

It’s about watching your family grow.

It’s about seeing your child become somebody’s mum or dad.

It’s about creating new traditions.

New memories.

New photographs.

New stories that will one day be told again.

And it’s about realising that although one chapter of your life has passed, another incredibly special one is just beginning.

So if you’re a new grandparent, don’t worry if you’re surprised by how emotional you feel.

Don’t worry if you can’t stop looking at photographs.

Don’t worry if you find yourself talking about your grandchild to absolutely everyone.

And don’t worry if you find yourself thinking, How can I possibly love this little person this much?

Because that’s one of the beautiful things about becoming a grandparent.

**Nobody can really prepare you for it.

You just have to experience it.**
