When I got pregnant with my first child I was only young myself and I felt very judged by everyone. This led to me sometimes prioritise the wrong things- like making sure the house was clean and tidy for guests instead of resting (or sometimes eating!). I devoted myself to being a good mum because, after all, I'd made my bed I had to lie in it and obviously I love my children very much.
The little girl I had when I was still a little girl myself is now 18 and has two younger brothers. I have prioritised routines, healthy homemade dinners, bedtimes, clean ironed clothes, after-school activities, big milestones, emotional teenage years and everything else you have to deal with as a parent. And somewhere along the way I lost who I am.
Gradually I stopped doing things that I'd once enjoyed and declined offers of going to the pub, etc. because I was tired or couldn't be bothered with the effort involved. I was very slowly and unknowingly isolating myself and losing confidence bit by bit. I still felt judged for being the youngest mother in the playground.
My advice for all new mothers is to prioritise yourself! It's not selfish to put yourself first sometimes. Do things for you, that will make your life better so when your child turns 18, and doesn't need you as much, you still have a life. It's taken me 18 years to realise this.
